According to Mitt Romney YOU do NOT have a right to visit YOUR SPOUSE if he or she is in the hospital!
Well, that's NOT exactly true. According to Mitt Romney, if you are not a married heterosexual couple THEN you don't have the right. Which means, married same-sex couples do not have a RIGHT to visit their spouses in the hospital, even if that spouse may be terminal. Imagine that! The doctor comes out to the waiting room to tell you that your husband or wife is about to die, BUT you are not allowed to be with him or her in those last few moments of life. Because YOU DON'T HAVE THAT RIGHT!
Will you tell me something please? Why do almost all of the opponents of Same-Sex Marriage say that giving same-sex couples the option of Civil Unions, instead of marriage, gives them all the same rights as married couples. Clearly, at least according to Mitt Romney, in cases of hospitalization, Civil Unions most certainly do NOT include those same RIGHTS! Now, keep in mind, this is according to Mitt Romney, not your individual state laws. State laws may say you do have the right under Civil Union Laws, but still Mitt Romney says you don't and even that you should not! That's why he signed a pledge to support a constitutional amendment to make sure same-sex couples never have that right.

FOR THE PURPOSE OF FULL DISCLOSURE: I am not any kind of an activist for LGBT rights or Same-Sex Marriage Laws or anything like that. In fact, I'm not an activist for anything political for that matter. (The last time I was actively involved in any serious political campaign was back in 1992 for Ross Perot.) I just think some things are right and some things are wrong, and that helps me decide who I'm voting for in this election for President of the United States. And, because of Newsvine, I get to share my opinions with you through articles like this one.
In this case I think Mitt Romney is absolutely totally completely WRONG in his positions on LGBT Rights, Same-Sex Marriage as it relates to those rights, and his support of a Defense of Marriage Act or Amendment.
President Obama is correct. Same-Sex couples should have the same rights to marry as do other couples, as that determines if they will have other rights, such as visiting their spouses in the hospital.
This is a Civil Right, and the reason that is obvious is because those people who oppose Same-Sex Marriage almost always do so by saying "Well they can have Civil Unions if they want, so they don't need marriage." Bullfeathers! See the word "Civil" in "Civil Unions"? It's right there. It's the exact same word as in "Civil Rights" isn't it. Yessiree!
The Defense of Marriage Act proposal is wrong, because it does NOT "defend" marriage against anything. What it does, and the only thing it does is to "restrict" marriage to only heterosexual couples. It should be called the Marriage Restriction Act, not DOMA.
If somebody really wants to "Defend" marriage, then it would probably be a real good idea to start by trying to defend marriages from Divorce. That's what's really attacking the sanctity of marriage in this country. Defend it from that first. Leave the other couples who want to be married alone.
Are same-sex couples entitled to the same rights as other couples? That's not just a question for presidential candidates. It's also being debated in states, cities and towns across America.
