Is it possible that Mitt Romney was set up to LOSE by his own party?
After all, how did he end up with the Republican nomination even though he has always been the "ANYONE BUT" candidate?
From the very beginning Mitt Romney, was the "Anyone BUT" candidate of the Republican Party. During the Republican Primaries the most frequent description of Republican poll numbers showed voters were for "Anyone BUT Romney!"
The Republican Primary was a collection of very weak candidates, made up of Snow Whitey - Michele Bachmann - and her 7 Dwarfs: Ron Paul (Doc), Newt Gingrich (Grumpy), Jon Huntsman (Bashful), Herman Cain (Happy), Rick Perry (Sleepy), Rick Santorum (Dopey) and, finally Mitt Romney (Flipper).
Where were the seasoned GOP veterans, like Mitch McConnell or John Boehner, or even Eric Cantor? Where were the young Republican turks like Marco Rubio, Chris Christie and Bobby Jindal to name just a few. Any one of those Republicans were stronger and more vote-worthy than the primary candidates that GOP voters were left to choose from.
During the Republican Primaries polls almost always showed one or the other of them as the front-runner ahead of Mitt Romney. The majority sentiment of Republican primary voters was always: "Anyone BUT Romney!"
It wasn't until after most of the other candidates "suspended" their campaigns that Mitt Romney finally became the leading candidate, by virtue of the fact that he out-spent the rest on negative campaign ads. Mitt Romney ended up - by process of elimination - as the default candidate at the end of a bloody gauntlet. He and Ron Paul were the only ones who didn't get kicked off the GOP Survivor Island, where the game plan for Mitt was: Outspend - Outscorn - Outlast.
In the end Romney was the sole survivor of one of the most NEGATIVE Primary campaigns anyone has seen in modern American politics. Mitt wasn't the winner. He was simply the last man standing. He was what was left after all the others had been beaten-up like; a gay blond prep student who was thrown down on the floor and had his hair cut off by the big bad bully. "Anyone BUT Romney" was that big bad DEFAULT bully CANDIDATE!
After it was determined Mitt Romney would be the GOP nominee, a new phrase was adopted by conservative Republican political bloggers. They started adding to the end of their posts "Anyone BUT Obama" far more often than posting anything like "Romney 2012". Again, Mitt Romney was the "ANYONE BUT" candidate. He wasn't "Mitt Romney 2012". He was now "Anyone BUT Obama".
A candidate with that little real support from his own party doesn't stand much of a chance against an incumbent President who is loved and respected by the vast majority of his party, including the majority of clear thinking independent non-partisan swing voters of all races, creeds and colors!
But why, if Mitt Romney is their candidate, is there still such weak support for his candidacy?
The truth is, the GOP knew from the very start they had no one who could beat Obama, so they let Romney have the nomination.
They knew Romney would lose, but that didn't matter because just about anyone else they ran against President Obama would lose as well. So why let Romney have the nomination? There's got to be a reason.
The payoff is this: By letting Mitt Romney run and lose they will never have to allow another Mormon to run for president from their party ever again, and that includes Jon Huntsman. They can look back on the loss of 2012 and say to future Mormon GOP wannabe candidates, "We tried that. We gave your guy a chance and he blew it. A Mormon can't get elected. Sorry!"
What other reason can there be? They, the GOP, want Romney to lose. They knew they were going to lose this election anyway, no matter what they did or who they ran. So, why not get something out of it, like a good reason to never again have to allow another Mormon to run as a GOP presidential candidate. It makes sense, in a twisted way.
Yet, there are still those deluded Republicans and Tea Party Conservatives clinging to the shred of hope that maybe Romney can win against Obama. They draw parallels between this race and the 1980 Carter - Reagan race. They have to find some way to make themselves believe their "Anyone BUT Obama" guy can win, even though in their hearts they know Mitt Romney has already lost.
So they've dredged up Ronald Reagan from the grave, trying vainly to use him to bolster Mitt's chances.
It is true that the last incumbent Democratic President to lose his re-election was Jimmy Carter. But, Carter lost because he was a weak President and Ronald Reagan was a strong challenger.
Regardless of what anyone says, President Obama is not a weak President. Even if he was, and to appease the anti-Obama people, lets say Obama is as weak, even as Carter was in 1980 (even though he's not). The FACT remains, Mitt Romney is NO Ronald Reagan!
Mitt Romney is the DEFAULT Republican candidate who, during the Republican Primaries nobody except a core 20% - 27% voters wanted until the very end when all the others but Ron Paul had dropped out. Recall that the most frequent campaign cry during the Republican Primaries was "Anyone BUT Romney!"
Now the Republicans have changed that to "Anyone BUT Obama" and that's really too little, too late. Mitt Romney is going to lose this election, because that's the way the GOP leaders have decided it will be.
Face it! It's going to be President Obama for FOUR MORE YEARS! Hurrah!
